 We accept these items at our composting/mulch area along Zion Back Road.  Please call the Garage number @ 383-2900 to schedule an appointment to drop off these items.  Please leave a message if there is no answer.  Garage hours are Monday through Thursday 6:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.   A one day advance notice would be appreciated.

Little Known Facts About Walker Township

- One of the oldest Native American artifacts in Centre County was found on a farm in the township.  It was dated about 9000 B.C.

- We had an early battlefield in Walker Township as evidenced by the cannonballs which were found in a field near the Zion Cemetery.  It may date to the French and Indian War.

- There is evidence of Indian cabins located in the Hecla Mountains on a warrant map of 1770.

- Walker Township had some of the largest and best iron ore banks in Centre County from which much iron ore was mined for furnaces in five townships including Walker.

- One of the first township high schools was opened in Pennsylvania in 1866.

- We had one of the earliest major recreational areas in Central Pennsylvania when the Central Railroad developed Hecla Park.

- In 1912 the state took over the roads in the state with the Nittany Valley road becoming the first road paved by the state with water bound macadam.

- The first golf course in Centre County was laid out in 1913 at the Nittany Country Club.

- Calvin and Robert Henry were well known Centre County basket makers from Walker Township.  These baskets were sold at market in Bellefonte and are known as Bellefonte Baskets.

- Walker Township had the first FHA financed water system in the United States.
